To reach more potential users, I also posted this on the AFH forum. I'm mentioning this for completions sake so nobody ends up thinking I'm playing some underhanded game.


I've been working on a program which is able to visualize ascension logs*. It can handle both parsed ascension logs such as those created by the AFH MafiaLog Parser and unparsed KolMafia session logs. The program can also create parsed logs with a format similar to the one used by the earlier mentioned AFH MafiaLog Parser or, if you do not want to use the internal parser, you can call the AFH parser directly from inside the program. But enough of an introduction, it'll be easier and faster if you just see for yourself. Smile

I hereby present the Ascension Log Visualizer.


Requirements
The Ascension Log Visualizer is written in Java and as such you will need to have a new enough Java SE Runtime Environment (called JRE) installed on your system. Java SE 5 (sometimes called Java SE 1.5) or newer is the minimum, however Java SE 6 Update 10 (Java SE 1.6.10) or newer is recommended (better looking GUI and faster rendering of said GUI). As far as operation systems go, there shouldn't be a problem no matter which one you are using as long as you have the correct JRE. No guaranties though, because personally I am able to test only on Windows XP and Linux(Ubuntu 8.10 to be exact).

If something seems buggy or otherwise strange, I'd greatly appreciate it if you send feedback about it. The same goes for feature suggestions, but note that I may wait with adding features depending on the size of them. Also, if you have a feature suggestion, you should be able to describe how it should look in the end. For example, if you want an additional chart to be added, you should be able to tell me what data should be found in it and what the chart should look like.

Feedback should be send to this thread, the thread on the AFH forum or through the issue tracker of the project. While forum PM or K-Mail will not be outright ignored (although I personally do hate the K-Mail interface), I would like for as much of the bug/feature discussions to be in the open as possible.



*Well, to be honest it is more of a continuation of a project I originally had stopped working on because I needed a complete break from KoL (I still do need breaks between playing but it isn't total abstinence anymore ...). But that is neither here nor there.

Stickied due to the awesomeness of this. Ironsting has taken to calling it the Obamaulizer because it's so awesome. Except I can't sticky it. I can lock it, move it, delete or or other nasties, but not sticky. Can someone get on that? -w4o

I saw some "glitches", but these are very likely from my log (and thus the input data) being incomplete. I'm looking forward to applying this to a 100% properly logged ascension.

This looks fantastic. I'm gonna give it a shot with my current run.

Edit: Wow, GREAT work. This is fantastic. MInor suggestion: can you make it so that it stops the parse when you smash the prism? For instance, it's counting my turns bounty hunting/meat farming in the log.

This is remarkable. Wonderful tool. The only time it gave me pause was when I selected the sessions folder and it appeared there were no files available, I expected to see the files that met the extension requirements. I echo what W4O said in regards to post prism turns being a filter.

Question: What is included in "opening the ballroom." Is that all the way from opening the manor to the 2nd moxie dresser?


And I have to say, I like that i finally have quantitative proof that w4o gets raped by the RNG, but rjthered is for whatever reason, immune from RNG hate.

As long as the option "Using old ascension day/turn counting" is not checked, this shouldn't happen while parsing mafia logs (it should stop the log after beating the NS). Preparsed logs however will be parsed completely. Both the AFH MafiaLog Parser and the Ascension Log Visualizer have options to ignore aftercore turns when parsing mafia logs, so I don't believe it is necessary to put any more options concerning that in.

In case the above mentioned option was indeed turned off and you were parsing from mafia logs, could you post the entire log of your fight against the NS? Or send it to me through PM if its too long.

This shouldn't happen, are you sure you selected the sessions folder (the Java file dialog can be a bit confusing when trying to select a directory). Otherwise, what are the names of the files inside the sessions folder?

Concerning the question: That would be correct. Smile

But the calculation may not be perfect in case you spent extra turns in some of the manor areas after you finished what you had to do to open the next area towards getting the Ballroom open. For example, if you stayed in the Hunted Library to grind some stats, those turns would be counted towards opening the Ballroom by the program.

Also, I made some static assumtions for the QuestRNG chart. They may or may not fit your characters. So in general, it is a good idea to be careful when using the numbers from that chart.

I tried both a pre-parsed log, doing it straight from my mafia logs with and without that option checked, and I keep getting the same result. Is it perhaps a problem since I smashed the prism today that it's counting the remainder of my turns from today? I obviously can't check on that until rollover.

Empty lines are recognised as the NS fight ending with you losing (mafia doesn't give any kind of info line if you lose a fight). I already have a fix in mind that should take care of that problem in almost all cases, but in the meantime, you can just remove the empty line and it should work.

What I should have said was that I expected within the visualizer when navigating File>Visualize Mafia Logs> for the first time that it would show the logs within the session folder before it opened. All the log files were there and it worked exactly as advertised.

Yup, that fixed it!

Another issue: I think this is a parser issue, not yours, but it's not counting when I hit a new level properly. For instance it had me hitting level 4 on turn 66, which I know is wrong, because I'm oxy, and I hit level 4 on day one, so it couldn't have been turn 66. Also it only counted me to level 11. I think it's counting my muscle, even though I'm a myst class, seeing as I had 105 muscle after fighting the NS.

I made a new beta release that should address most of the problems people had with the program. Please note that all users have to recreate the data files before using this new revision. You can recreate the data files through the Extra->Recreate data files option.

This should be fixed now. It was a problem with mafia logs that didn't contain player snapshots. The parser could not determine what class was used and thus defaulted to muscle as the mainstat. It will attempt to guess the class based on total stat gains in such cases from now on.

I'm really glad our feedback is helping! I mean seriously, this thing is so good we're calling it the Obamaulizer in /clan. Smile I was on the verge of utter and complete ascension burnout, but now I can't wait to ascend again so i can track things with this tool.

This happens if your log does not contain any player snapshots. The parser guesses the mainstat based on total stat gains in such cases. However, since there is no way to tell the classes apart, it just assumes TT for muscle, PM for myst and DB for moxie.

To get the best results with the parser it is best to turn on every logging option of mafia except "Log adventures left instead of adventures used" in the KolMafia preferences.

I get thing like total adventures in the spooky forest 924 ?
even if this is caused by blank lines in the ns fight it will be a major hassle chasing them all down

Same questions as before: Are you sure the old ascension day/turn counting option is turned off? And if so, could you post a log of your fight against the NS (PM to me if it's too long)?

I can't reproduce the error here, it seems to work. The fight log seems fine and should be correctly recognised from looking at it with my own eyes too. Are you sure you posted the right log? (not saying you're too stupid to post the right one, just trying to rule out (human) errors Smile)

Anyway, if the problem continues to appear, would you be fine with sending me the complete log of the faulty ascension? Because it is probably a problem with the log in general then, which would be hard to diagnose without having the log in front of me.

I can't say for sure without seeing the log of course, but I believe this happened because KolMafia gave an incorrect turn count for the first 13 turns and continued the numbers from the last ascension instead. Sometimes, directly after ascending, KolMafia doesn't recheck some variables such as turn count, which is the reason this happens. I believe newer daily builds tried to address this problem.

If I'm right with my guess, I can tell you that this probably will not be fixed by me, because I'd rather KolMafia would fix such problems itself. You can however change the incorrect turn numbers to the correct values and everything should be working as intended.

If I guessed wrong, I'd like to see the log, of course again only if you are willing to send it to me.



P.S.: Logs should be send to orriiion [at] googlemail [dot] com. It's best to compress (with 7-Zip/WinRAR/WinZip or whatever else you use) the logs before sending them, so I'll have an easier time handling them on my end, plus the filesize will be much smaller.

As of my last ascension a few days ago, this was fixed in mafia.

I checked the logs, and it turned out that all the faulty logs had the turncount problem I explained in my last post. Otherwise everything seemed to be more or less fine.

I uploaded a new beta version to the project website that is in a way able to handle such cases from now on. The ALV will, as I said, not fix the turn numbers on its own, it will however attempt to ignore adventure intervals that do not seem to fit the turn rundown. One could call it graceful failing because, while it doesn't fix the problem, it will at least not totally break further logging.

To prevent these turncount errors from happening, I recommend to either download one of the newer daily builds or restart mafia after ascending (simply refreshing the session may also be enough).


Also, on the notion of uploading new versions, I'd like to point towards the project feeds. Especially the Downloads feed should be interesting since it gives one the ability to stay up-to-date on the newest released versions while not having to constantly check the site or this thead. I thought I should throw this info out there in case people overlooked it on the site. Smile

yes the numbers seem to start properly from the point where I would normally hit the refresh button to see the tavern properly
so just refreshing should be enough

I am intrigued by the project feed. Properly set up it will download newer versions on it's own? I read something about that over at mafia and haven't tried it out as of yet.

Heh, no it isn't that sophisticated. Wink

It's basically just a news feed that keeps you updated on the newest changes. Depending on which feed you use, it goes from updating when I upload new versions to giving updates on every source code change I do. (Wikipedia article on web feeds)

Simply put, the feeds make it easier to follow the development of the program without having to actively check sites or forum threads yourself (just your favourite feed reader). I figured some people might be into that. I would however appreciate it if people also continued to give feedback in here or in the thread over in the AFH forum. Wink That is not limited to bug reports, feature suggestions are also fine. I have to point to the OP on that though, as while I'll don't rigorously keep to it, I try to honour this at least to a certain degree.

No problem. To directly visualize mafia session logs click File->Visualize mafia logs. On the dialog that now opens, click Find Directory and select your session logs folder (on Windows there is a folder named sessions at the location where you saved KolMafia to). You should now be able to select some ascensions from the dialog, the exact number depending on your log files. Select the ones you'd like to visualize and hit Run parser.

That should be all. The other options all work relatively similar, although they all do different stuff.

In this regard, the end user wiki and especially the Getting Started page should be of interest for people looking to see what each menu option does.
